It can be really helpful to have a straightforward style guide for guys deciding what to wear for senior pictures. If you are a guy or parent feeling lost trying to figure out what to wear for senior pictures, I get it – This part can be super overwhelming! So, let’s break it down so it’s really easy:

  • Typically, for my guys I recommend at least a couple outfits for an hour session and more for a longer package.
  • To get the most variety possible, I recommend doing one casual look and something a little more dressy.
  • You can also opt to have one of your outfits be a sports uniform or college tee – or throw those on at the end for a few quick shots!
  • If you have a mini-session, you can still bring a second shirt for a very quick change.

A few general guidelines to keep in mind:

Be Comfortable and Be Yourself

The number one, most important thing to remember when planning your outfits: if it’s not comfortable to wear in real life, it won’t make you feel confident on camera! If you aren’t someone who likes to dress up or ever wear a suit jacket…I don’t recommend doing it now. In order to make the pictures look most like you…they should be a slightly elevated version of an outfit you would normally wear. Don’t try to push yourself too far outside your comfort zone!

Stick to Classics

Stick to timeless, clean looks that are in good condition, clean, and wrinkle free. Avoid bold patterns and bright colors. Instead, lean towards rich colors, neutrals, and tones that compliment your skin tone.

Some classic combinations:

  • Crisp white or light blue button-up
  • Dark jeans or khakis
  • Brown or black shoes or clean new tennis shoes
  • Jacket, blazer, or varsity jacket

Empty Your Pockets

I always do my best to remind guys of this on the day of our shoot,…. but don’t keep anything in your pockets during photos! Your phone, keys, wallet, etc. will all show up in your pictures as a random square in your pocket…and we don’t want that!

Guys Can Accessorize Too

Consider bringing along a hat if you are wearing your sports gear, a special watch, add a jacket, layer up… think outside the box a bit! Bringing along additional pieces like this allows us to get a lot of variety in your photos in a short time, and make them feel more like you!

Style Inspiration:

Casual Guy Outfits

Most seniors in the PNW go for a casual look in their senior photos. Just remember to keep your clothing clean, wrinkle free, and avoid neon colors and logos.

Add Some Layers

Layers are a great way to add interest to a look. And it makes it really easy for a quick change! Start with a simple t-shirt or long sleeved tee and add a flannel, vest, jacket, sweatshirt, etc.

Dress It Up a Bit

You don’t have to go over the top to dress up your look. This can be as simple as a shirt and slacks, or you can add a bit more to the picture with a button down shirt, jacket, and nice pants. And, of course, a nice suit is always classic and looks fantastic in photos.

Other Ways To Prep For Your Senior Pictures

  • Plan a haircut a few days to a week before your photo shoot.
  • Shave or manicure facial hair the morning of your session.
  • Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed.
  • Use moisturizer and chapstick prior to your photos to avoid dry, flaky skin.

And Finally: A few prop ideas

  • Bring a pet! This one is my absolute favorite.
  • Sports uniform, shirt, hat, etc
  • Medals or awards
  • Musical instrument
  • Supplies for any hobbies you love
  • Something representing your post high school plans
  • Car or truck

Senior photos are all about celebrating you. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, it shows in the final pictures. So, above all else, stick to outfits that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like your best self—and you’ll end up with photos you’ll be excited about.
